DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge announces the Friends of Valle de Oro Opening Doors to Nature Scholarship Program for the 2025-2026 school year.  Under the Program this year\, the Friends will award scholarships with the minimum individual amount being $500.  These scholarships will be awarded to undergraduate college students who are enrolled for the 2025-2026 academic year in an undergraduate conservation/environmental-focused degree or certificate program. \nProgram Guidelines and Priorities: \nStudents must meet at least one of the following criteria in order to apply: \n\nAttended a High School or College within New Mexicoand are currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a (2)-year community college or (4)-year college or university in any location. OR\nAttended a High School or College outside of New Mexico but are currently enrolled in a two (2)-year community college or four (4)-year college or university within the state of New Mexico. Undergraduates only.\nStudents who are eligible can apply in more than one year\, but this Scholarship can be awarded to an individual only one time.\n\nSome preference may be given to applicants who have participated in a Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge or Friends of Valle de Oro NWR project\, internship\, or program\, but this experience is not required. \nCompleted applications must be received by the Friends of Valle de Oro no later than 11:59 pm Friday August 1\, 2025.  Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. \nApplications will be reviewed and award recipients selected by the Friends of Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge Scholarship Committee.  The scholarship winners will be informed on Monday August 11\, 2025.

DESCRIPTION:*Organized and led by NM Wild\, the Continental Divide trail Coalition and CDT Trail Adopter Dr. Kozoll* \nNew Mexico Wild is seeking volunteers to contribute to a trail maintenance project co-led by the Continental Divide Trail Coalition and CDT Trail Adopter\, Dr. Richard (Dick) Kozoll. This project is scheduled for Saturday\, June 21 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Santa Fe National Forest staff will also participate in the project.  \nThis project will focus on corridor improvement and signage of the upper and lower portions of a new section of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDT) from the Nacimiento Mine to the Las Vacas Trail junction\, to improve public access and enjoyment along the CDT. \nThis is a great opportunity to see this amazing new trail and contribute to its improvement! \nMeeting Location\nWe will meet at 10 am at the Nacimiento Mine entrance on NM Highway 126\, 5 miles east of Cuba and 1/2 mile past the cattleguard at the Santa Fe Forest boundary. SUMMARY:Gila Headwaters – Wild and Scenic River Restoration Invasive Plant Project (Community Event)
DESCRIPTION:*Organized and led by NM Wild and Heart of the Gila* \nJoin New Mexico Wild and Heart of the Gila for this one-day workshop and volunteer project at the headwaters of the Gila River. This is a family-friendly event and a way to give back to the Gila. We’ll explore the area and learn about the native and non-native species along the Gila River and what makes the Gila so vital to the forest ecosystem. Then\, our work together will involve removing non-native plants from this popular access to the Gila River and restoring this popular riverfront area for visitors and wildlife. We’ll include a short hike along the mainstem of the Gila River past the Gila Wilderness boundary and learn what makes this segment of the river so special and eligible for wild and scenic designation. \nJoin us for the day or opt to make a weekend out of it to explore the Gila River and nearby hot springs. \nWhat to bring: your own lunch\, plenty of water\, layers appropriate for changing temperatures and unpredictable weather conditions\, sun protection (layers\, sunscreen\, hat)\, long pants and close-toed shoes appropriate for working outdoors\, on uneven terrain\, and with river crossings. Bathing suit and water appropriate clothing for swimming and river wading. \nWe will provide all work tools and protective equipment needed. DESCRIPTION:*Organized and led by NM Wild* \nJoin NM Wild for a hike to Stewart Lake in the wilderness headwaters of the Pecos River. Learn about New Mexico Wild’s work to protect our watersheds and rivers and meet others with a passion for land and water conservation. The hike to Stewart Lake tours the riparian habitat along Winsor Creek\, highlights the transitional ecology of Northern New Mexico’s mature subalpine forest types\, and exhibits the area’s unique high-elevation wetland meadows. Be prepared to step over some down trees\, navigate some muddy trail conditions\, and for variable weather conditions on this high elevation hike\, which tops out around 10\,200 feet. \nThis is challenging terrain–come prepared for variable weather and rough trail conditions. DESCRIPTION:Join the Environmental Education Association of New Mexico (EEANM) and the New Mexico Informal Science Educators Network (NM ISE Net) for a two-day workshop to gain understanding of these new standards and transform your programs.\nWho: Seeking non-formal educators interested in gaining hands-on experience with the NM STEM Ready! Science Standards and redesigning their activities and programs to best support classroom teachers. Teams of educators are encouraged to attend.\nWhen: Thursday\, August 16th from 9 am-4 pm and Friday\, August 17th from 9 am-3 pm\nWhere: New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science \nThe goals of this workshop are the following:\n1) Provide non-formal educators with a basic understanding of the NM STEM Ready! Science Standards\n2) Share knowledge and skills for redesigning programs to be responsive to and supportive of these new standards\n3) Begin modifying programs in community with others \nPlease see the Draft Agenda for a schedule of Thursday’s and Friday’s activities. \nRegistration is required and this opportunity is limited to the first 30 who complete the registration process.
