DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, April 29\, 2017 from noon – 3 p.m. at the Cottonwood Gulch Base Camp in Thoreau\, New Mexico to discuss Peter Wohlleben’s The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel\, How They Communicate—Discoveries from a Secret World. \nThis is sure to be an exciting day exploring Cottonwood Gulch Base Camp\, a 540-acre nature preserve approximately two hours from Albuquerque in the foothills of the Zuni Mountains. \nOver 90 years\, the Cottonwood Gulch Expeditions “sponsors educational wilderness expeditions and outdoor programs in the American Southwest that promote personal growth\, scientific\, historic\, and cultural discovery as well as a knowledgeable environmental ethic among all those who participate.” \nThis will be a unique EEANM Book Club experience and we hope you can join in on the fun! \nIf you are interested in carpooling from Albuquerque\, please meet at the Annex Building across the street from the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (1000 18th Street NW\, Albuquerque\, NM) by 10 a.m. on April 29. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, February 11 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Desert Teaching Oasis Gardens at Albuquerque Academy at 6400 Wyoming Blvd\, Albuquerque\, NM to discuss Gary Nathan’s Growing Food in a Hotter\, Drier Land – Lessons from Desert Farmers on Adapting to Climate Uncertainty. We look forward to being inspired by the beauty of the gardens along with discussing ways of growing food in our arid landscape. This will be a great opportunity to be inspired to get out and get our own gardens ready for spring planting soon! Please bring your own lunch and water to this and be prepared to be outside and enjoy the elements. \nInformation about the Desert Teaching Oasis Gardens: \nThe Desert Oasis Teaching Gardens was born in the summer of 2013 as a vision for a community-based space for experiential learning and exploration of regenerative agriculture. \nEarlier that year\, the irrigation West of the Science Building at Albuquerque Academy had broke\, leading to topsoil loss and erosion. Karen Bentrup\, a garden volunteer and experienced farmer\, observed these losses and pondered sustainable solutions. At the same time\, inspired by tours of East Coast\, school-based garden and farming projects\, Karen Beamish began pondering agricultural possibilities for the space. \nComing together\, the two explored the works of dryland farmers\, regional cultural historians\, and water harvesting experts\, to brainstorm potential solutions for the struggling landscape. Gary Paul Nabhan‘s book\, Growing Food in a Hotter\, Drier Land\, proved exceptionally inspiring. With Naban’s work in mind\, and guidance from local experts\, the two crafted the vision for the Desert Oasis Teaching gardens with the focus on desert cultivation in the face of climate change. \nToday that vision has become a reality and our garden continues to grow because of the generous support of our community.

Educators\, both classroom and nonformal\, are invited to come learn about what creates community character and what students and groups can do to become engaged in determining development in their own communities.  A hands-on\, green-infrastructure\, follow-up project will provide an opportunity to bring students to contribute to the improvement of their own community and learn new skills that can be applied at your own school or outdoor area. \nAll attendees receive Project Learning Tree’s Exploring Environmental Issues: Places We Live curriculum and a delicious lunch. In addition\, teachers receive a $50 stipend for the educator workshop on October 24th and $75 for attending the follow-up TBD for a total of $125!
