Summit Theme

The NM Outdoor Learning Summit hosted by EENM will center on the Rio Grande cottonwood tree (Populus deltoides wislizeni, “Te” in Tewa, “Álamo” in Spanish) as our symbol for this year’s gathering. Much like cottonwoods, outdoor education practitioners are navigating a landscape in flux. Experiencing a loss of funding, of space, and connection, we turn to our environment and seek inspiration from the natural world to move forward. This year’s summit will emphasize navigating changes through collaboration, creativity, and sturdy roots in the land we know and love.

As the Rio Grande winds its way from northern to southern New Mexico, the Bosque along its banks relies on fast-growing cottonwood trees to provide structure, shade, and habitat. Rio Grande Cottonwoods need three things to grow: bare Earth, a high water table, and direct sunlight. Historically, these conditions were found in the flux of the river: sections of forest flooded and washed away one year might become a sandy bank the next, giving rise to the perfect conditions for growing new stands and continuing the legacy of this majestic tree (Bosque Education Guide, NM Museum of Natural History). Taking inspiration from this complex survival strategy, the NM Outdoor Leadership Summit will inspire attendees to find their own pockets of opportunity among the changing national landscape.
