Executive Director Position Announcement

Environmental Education of New Mexico’s (EENM) Executive Director works to support outdoor and environmental learning, equitable access to the outdoors, and nonprofit work as part of an innovative, community-centered organization. The Executive Director will work 30 hours per week, remotely based anywhere in New Mexico, and report to EENM’s Board of Directors.

EENM is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides, promotes, and enhances quality environmental education by offering New Mexicans opportunities for professional development, communication, and partnership. Responsibilities

Community Building and Engagement

  • Represent EENM and show leadership within both the environmental education community and in the greater community; serve members and build member constituencies with communication and statewide initiatives. Grow, deepen, and strengthen EENM community and membership
  • Guide and direct communications strategy and outreach
  • Collaborate with community, state, national, and international organizations to foster publicity, partnerships, and outreach for the organization
  • Cultivate political support for environmental and outdoor learning in NM from individuals, partners, corporations, organizations, foundations, and government entities
  • Represent EENM’s interests in national, statewide and regional meetings and conferences to foster publicity, partnerships, and outreach
  • Advance Every Kid, Every Day, Every Way and other key mission-driven initiatives
  • Ensure that EENM is grounded in equity and authentic inclusion and further these values within the EENM community
  • Embrace and progress EENM’s community-centered strategic plan

Operations

  • Work with the Board of Directors to design and implement policies, initiatives, and associated workplans to ensure the organizational health of EENM, serve the mission of EENM, and advance our goals; engage in long-term and short-term strategic and operational planning
  • Accept EENM Policies and Procedures Manual as a condition of employment
  • Maintain all EENM digital and paper files
  • Report monthly and as requested by the Board of Directors; the Executive Director reports specifically to the Board President and Treasurer 
  • Hire, train, supervise, and work collaboratively with staff and contractors 
  • Play a key role in cultivation, recruitment, training and development of new Board members
  • Oversee EENM short- and long-term programs and projects

Financial  

  • Drive fundraising strategy and efforts to sustain operational capacity
  • Acquire and manage grants and donors
  • Manage budget, financial records, and spending 
  • Work with the bookkeeper and Board Treasurer to ensure that good accounting practices are continually employed
  • Ensure adherence to EENM’s legal obligations and reporting requirements, and keep state and federal registrations current

Required Qualifications

The ideal candidate will show a demonstrated commitment to environmental and outdoor learning, the mission and vision of EENM, and have a strong interest in broadening the impact of outdoor and environmental learning in New Mexico. In addition, the ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Three years’ experience in managing a nonprofit organization
  • Strong passion for and familiarity with environmental and outdoor learning and an understanding of the field in the state, nationally, and internationally
  • Successful track record in financial development, grant writing, and collaborating through strategic partnerships; ability to prioritize tasks, programs, and opportunities to ensure they are aligned to EENM’s mission and values
  • Ability to support the design, facilitate, and delivery of mission aligned programs
  • Experience with bookkeeping or financial management, with the ability to prioritize spending decisions for most effective program support; skilled at creating and managing ongoing programs, and/or organizational budgets
  • Experience in public relations, business, and/or marketing for a nonprofit organization
  • Commitment to a shared leadership model in Board management and staff relations; strong organizational and communication skills to initiate, form, and effectively maintain relationships
  • Strong networking and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people and organizations (e.g., rural/urban, low-income/high-income, etc.), coworkers, colleagues, peers, and partners; demonstrated success in team building and conflict resolution
  • Demonstrated commitment to building positive relationships with and equitable access across diverse identities, backgrounds, and social constructs, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity to work toward justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Strong communication skills including writing, public speaking and presenting
  • Proficient with or willing to become proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Quickbooks, and Google Workspace
  • Must reside in or be willing to relocate to New Mexico; must have the ability to work from home (or another location with reliable access to telephone and high-speed internet service) and have reliable transportation for travel to meetings, conferences, etc.

Preferred Candidate

  • Previous knowledge and experience with EENM programs and Every Kid, Every Day, Every Way 
  • Previous exposure and involvement with EENM (e.g. partner organizations, EENM membership)

Compensation

The Executive Director will work 30 hours per week, and the salary range is $54,600-$62,000, depending on experience. If the need arises and funds are available, the job can evolve to a full-time position.

  • Registration and travel costs will be paid for EENM and NAAEE conferences and professional development events, subject to budgetary restrictions
  • Benefits after one year: Two weeks of paid vacation and $330 per month benefits stipend

Mission: Through implementing an advocacy-focused movement and advancing collaboration and leadership, EENM will ensure every NM child has equitable access to environmental and outdoor learning.

The center of EENM’s work is  Every Kid, Every Day, Every Way: A multi-year shared vision and strategy to provide daily equitable access to the outdoors and environmental learning for all New Mexico kids. This shared vision and strategy, the first of its kind in the country, was developed from three years of community dialogues with over 200 individuals representing 90 organizations and with the support of our 17 EENM Fellows.
