Taos Workshop: Bringing NGSS Outdoors: A Two-Day Deep Dive Workshop for the NM STEM Ready! Standards

A FREE two-day workshop for classroom teachers and educators to introduce the NM STEM Ready! Standards (New Mexico’s new science standards adopted in the 2018-2019 school year) through nature-based activities and programming will be offered in Taos by the Environmental Education Association 
of New Mexico in partnership with NM EPSCoR and the USDA Forest Service. Participants will be introduced to the NM STEM Ready! Standards, which include the Next Generation Science Standards, and will be provided with curriculum that can be used in the classroom, schoolyard, and on field trips to local forests including Project Learning Tree. Participants will have the opportunity to deliver a training for teachers in their local school districts and earn a $125 stipend.
Who: Seeking classroom teachers and non-formal educators interested in gaining hands-on experience with the NM STEM Ready! Science Standards using nature-based curriculum
When: Monday, July 1 from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Tuesday, July 2 from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Where: Carson National Forest Supervisor’s Office ( 208 Cruz Alta Rd, Taos, NM 87571)
Participants will be provided with two days of high-quality and tested training, Meet & Greet lunches with Forest staff during the training, a copy of a Project Learning Tree activity guide, a variety of NGSS/NM STEM Ready! Standards resources, ideas for implementation at school and local forests, access to an online community of support for NM STEM Ready! Standards implementation and training support, and the opportunity to earn a $125 stipend upon delivery of a short training in their local school.
After completing the training, participants will have:
1) A basic understanding of the NM STEM Ready! Science Standards including how to use the Next Generation Science Standards framework
2) Knowledge and skills for implementing NM STEM Ready! Standards through nature-based activities in the classroom, schoolyard, and local forests
3) A new understanding for the innovations in Next Generation Science Standards, including opportunities for instructional shifts
4) Support to offer a short training on NM STEM Ready! Standards in their local school and will be able to earn a $125 stipend upon delivery of the training
Your facilitator team:
Eileen Everett is the Executive Director for the Environmental Education Association of NM and has worked as an environmental educator having personally taught over 25,000 New Mexican students around the state through mostly outdoor, multi-day programs. She deeply values an abundance mindset, education designed for all students, and a more equitable and inclusive world. Eileen has strong nonprofit experience, having worked in the social sector for over 15 years and serves as an Associate Facilitator for the Santa Fe Community Foundation’s Emerging Social Sector Leaders Program.
Selena Connealy is the Education and Outreach Manager for the New Mexico EPSCoR State Office. In that role, she is responsible for workforce development and external engagement activities which include faculty training, undergraduate and graduate student programs, and public outreach. STEM education equity is her passion and she advocates for systemic solutions to engage all students in STEM in both formal and informal learning environments. In addition to this current effort to build statewide capacity for the NM STEM Ready! standards, she has collaborated with EEANM on a number of additional projects. Connealy earned a PhD in curriculum and instruction from Texas Tech University.
Shannon Whitney has worked with elementary students for seven years, serving in public school systems in New Mexico and Washington State. She is in her second year of facilitating Making Sense of Science teacher workshops as a partner with the New Mexico Public Education Department. Shannon holds a Master of Education and a Master of Public Administration, as well as endorsements in Reading and TESOL. This year she became New Mexico’s newest certified Environmental Educator. She currently works as a Reading Interventionist in Santa Fe Public Schools.
